Tyranny, government, and business
Continuing the debate, I quite liked this reply from galleryhop - it raised a question I had previously posed to Jakob.
i’ve never quite figured out why wealthy white tech-enthusiasts are so drawn to libertarianism. i realise information wants to be free (i might even believe that myself), but the collective whining about “fairness” and “level playing fields” and the moral hazards of market regulation seem so egregious coming from those whom the existing system has smiled upon.
that was a really long sentence that begs editing, so let me be more succint: NO BACKSIES. whatever you think of the current system of laws and power and money in the US, it’s led to the largest consolidation of private wealth in human history. obviously some people are cleaning up, including the young creative overeducated mostly white people who make the tech toys that venture capitalists drool over. why bite the hand that feeds you? would you truly smash the system that supports your rants?
i can agree that change is needed. but i am more in the “downward redistribution of wealth” camp, and i’m pretty sure you wouldn’t like that.
Let me briefly explain my beliefs on the role of government. The purpose of a state is to protect people from each other by protecting their property rights; basically, libertarianism. I believe we need police, courts, and a military, but that those institutions must be under the control of objective laws. I think consolidation of power under subjective laws (ie, the current US system) is the biggest threat to our freedom and survival.
